Velvet Mesquite (Prosopis velutina)
Velvet Mesquite (Prosopis velutina)
The velvet mesquite is a hardy, drought-tolerant tree native to the deserts and grasslands of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Recognized for its graceful, spreading canopy and finely textured, fern-like foliage, it provides valuable shade and habitat in arid landscapes. In spring and early summer, the tree produces fragrant, pale yellow flower spikes that attract bees and other pollinators. These blooms are followed by long seed pods that are an important food source for wildlife and have traditionally been used by Indigenous peoples to make flour and other foods.
Velvet mesquite thrives in full sun and well-draining soils, adapting to sandy, rocky, or clay conditions. Once established, it requires very little supplemental water thanks to its deep root system, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and desert gardens. While young trees benefit from occasional deep watering, mature specimens are highly resilient and can tolerate prolonged periods of drought. Pruning can help develop a strong structure and maintain clearance beneath the canopy.
Velvet mesquite is generally considered pet friendly. The tree is not known to be toxic to dogs, cats, or horses. However, its long, sharp thorns can cause injuries to curious pets, and consuming large quantities of seed pods may lead to digestive upset in some animals. Planting the tree where pets have limited access to fallen branches and thorns is recommended.
USDA Hardiness Zones: 7–11. With its attractive form, exceptional drought tolerance, and ecological benefits, velvet mesquite is a long-lived landscape tree that provides cooling shade, supports pollinators and wildlife, and adds character to desert environments.
