Stapelia, a low-growing, spineless, stem succulent plant genus, is primarily found in South Africa with some species from other parts of Africa. While previously including certain Asian and Latin American species, they have now been transferred to other genera. The flowers of certain species, particularly Stapelia gigantea, can grow up to 41 cm (16 inches) in diameter when fully opened. Additionally, most Stapelia flowers are hairy and emit a scent reminiscent of decaying flesh when in bloom.
