Carnegiea gigantea 'Saguaro'

The saguaro is a tree-like cactus species found in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, Sonora, and California. It can reach heights of up to 12 meters and is recognized as the state wildflower of Arizona. The plant's scientific name, Carnegiea gigantea, pays tribute to Andrew Carnegie. 

Saguaro plants have an impressively long lifespan, with some living over 150 years. Around the age of 75-100 years, they may develop their first side arm, although some never do. These arms serve to increase the plant's reproductive ability, leading to more flowers and fruit. Additionally, saguaros can store significant amounts of rainwater, visibly growing in the process and using the stored water as needed. This unique feature allows them to survive during times of drought, making them a vital species that provides food and shelter for many other species.

The saguaro has been utilized by humans for sustenance and protection for centuries. Native groups, including the Tohono Oʼodham and Pima, extract syrup from its delectable red fruits and use its ribs as construction resources in barren desert regions. This iconic cactus is a popular symbol in Mexican and Arizonan traditions, as well as in American Southwest cinema.
