The Portulacaria Afra 'Elephant Bush', also known as Mini Jade or Spekboom, is a versatile and easily grown succulent. In warm climates, it can reach a height of 4 feet as a dense shrub if planted outdoors. When kept in a small pot indoors, it remains a small bonsai plant. This plant is native to South Africa and Swaziland, where it thrives on sunny and rocky slopes. Interestingly, it has a symbiotic relationship with elephants as they sometimes eat its branches and their trampling helps propagate new shrubs from stem cuttings. The P. afra stands out as an easy-to-grow plant, perfect for beginners. With deep red stems that verge on purple, it beautifully complements its bright green leaves. When planted outdoors, it forms a cascading ground cover that can eventually grow into a 4-foot tall shrub.
