Opuntia ficus-indica
Opuntia ficus-indica
Opuntia ficus-indica is a large, iconic species of prickly pear cactus known for its flat, paddle-shaped green pads and brightly colored, edible fruits. Native to Mexico and widely cultivated in arid and semi-arid regions around the world, it thrives in full sun, hot temperatures, and well-drained soils with minimal water. The plant is valued both as an ornamental and as a food crop, with young pads (nopales) used as a vegetable and the sweet fruits (tunas) eaten fresh or processed. Highly drought-tolerant and resilient, Opuntia ficus-indica plays an important role in sustainable agriculture, erosion control, and traditional cuisines where water conservation is essential.
