Opuntia cochenillifera ‘Sunburst’ is a striking, colorful prickly pear cactus prized for its unusual paddle-shaped growth and vibrant yellow, orange, pink, and green coloration. New pads often emerge with bright golden or warm orange tones before gradually maturing to green, creating a beautiful multicolored display. With plenty of sunlight, ‘Sunburst’ can develop into an attractive branching specimen and may produce flowers and fruit when mature. It is highly drought tolerant and thrives in full sun, excellent drainage, and minimal watering once established, making it an excellent choice for xeriscapes, cactus gardens, and containers. Pet Friendly: No. Like other Opuntia, it has glochids—tiny, irritating spines that can easily attach to skin and fur—so it should be kept away from pets and areas where animals may brush against it. Hardiness: USDA Zones 9–11. Protect it from prolonged freezing temperatures and excessive winter moisture.
