Mammillaria plumosa, commonly known as the Feather Cactus, is a charming and delicate-looking cactus native to Mexico. This small, spherical cactus is notable for its soft, feathery appearance, created by dense, white, hair-like spines that completely cover its body. The spines give the plant a fluffy, almost cloud-like texture, making it a popular choice for collectors. Feather Cactus has a greenish body with subtle tubercles that are barely visible due to the thick covering of white spines. In late spring to early summer, it produces small, pink to purple flowers that bloom in clusters around the top of the cactus, adding a colorful contrast to its soft, white spiny coat. Mammillaria plumosa thrives in bright, indirect light and well-draining soil, making it an ideal choice for container gardens or windowsill displays. It is a slow-growing and low-maintenance plant, requiring only occasional watering, and is well-suited for dry, arid climates. This cactus is perfect for growing in USDA hardiness zones 9-11, as it is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from freezing temperatures.
