Mammillaria melanocentra is a stout perennial cactus species with a glaucous green color. It has large, pyramidal tubercles arranged in 8 to 13 spirals, with white wool in the axils and no bristles. The stem can grow up to 16 cm high and 10-12 cm in diameter, with 4-6 radial spines 15-20 cm long and a single central spine up to 3 cm long. The flowers, which bloom in the spring, are whitish to bright pink or carmine with a darker midline and measure approximately 2 x 2 cm. The fruits are club-shaped and can reach up to 30 mm long, with colors ranging from pink to scarlet. This species is native to Northern Mexico and can be found in Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas.
