This diminutive cactus is commonly found in dry mountain regions, as well as in sandy or rocky canyons and plains. They thrive in sparsely populated woodlands, often appearing amidst desert shrubs such as creosote (Larrea tridentata) or in open grasslands. Their blooming phase is often the only time they are easily spotted.
