Leuchtenbergia principis has a robust and napiform underground root that eventually develops into a caudiciform trunk. Despite its name, it doesn't resemble a cactus at all. Its 10-13 cm long tubercles resemble triangular agave-like leaves, hence the nickname "Agave Cactus". This plant is native to North-central Mexico, specifically the states of Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas, where it is found in semi-desert regions with calcareous soil. It is a rather uncommon species, with an estimated population of over 500,000 individuals scattered sparsely across a large area. Growing at altitudes between 1,500 to 2,000 metres above sea level, Leuchtenbergia principis is often found growing alone or in clusters with other plants such as Agave and Hechtia.
