Kalanchoe tomentosa 'Chocolate Soldier'

Kalanchoe tomentosa 'Chocolate Soldier' is a charming succulent known for its fuzzy, velvety leaves and distinctive chocolate-brown markings along the leaf edges. Native to Madagascar, this compact plant has an upright, branching growth habit and can develop into an attractive small shrub over time. Its soft, silvery-green foliage gives it a unique texture, while the dark margins add contrast and character. Mature plants may occasionally produce small, tubular flowers, although the foliage is usually the main attraction.

This easy-care succulent thrives in bright light and prefers several hours of direct morning or afternoon sun when gradually acclimated. Plant it in a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix and allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Like many succulents, Kalanchoe tomentosa 'Chocolate Soldier' stores water in its leaves and is much more tolerant of drought than consistently wet soil. Avoid getting water on the fuzzy leaves whenever possible, as prolonged moisture can contribute to rot or fungal problems.

Kalanchoe tomentosa 'Chocolate Soldier' is not pet friendly. Kalanchoe species contain compounds that can be toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Eating the plant may cause gastrointestinal upset, vomiting, diarrhea, and, in larger amounts, more serious symptoms. It is best kept in a location where pets cannot chew on the leaves.

USDA Hardiness Zones: 9–11. In cooler climates, Kalanchoe tomentosa 'Chocolate Soldier' is best grown as a container plant and protected from frost and freezing temperatures. With its fuzzy foliage, distinctive chocolate-colored edges, and easy-care nature, it makes an excellent addition to succulent collections, sunny windowsills, and drought-tolerant displays.
