Gerrardanthus macrorhizus is a fascinating caudiciform plant native to southern Africa, valued for its large, swollen base and vigorous climbing vines. The caudex, which serves as a water-storage organ, can grow up to 12–16 inches (30–40 centimeters) in diameter over time, often resembling a smooth, rounded rock partially buried in the soil. From this base, slender, twining stems emerge, producing attractive, heart-shaped leaves that create a lush, trailing canopy. During the warmer months, Gerrardanthus macrorhizus bears small, greenish-yellow to orange flowers, followed by ornamental seed pods. It thrives in bright light, well-draining soil, and moderate watering, allowing the caudex to dry slightly between waterings. Its unique growth habit—combining a sculptural base with elegant climbing foliage—makes Gerrardanthus macrorhizus a highly sought-after specimen among collectors of caudiciform and unusual succulent plants.
