Euphorbia submammillaris is a striking and compact succulent native to South Africa, known for its unusual, spiny, cactus-like appearance despite belonging to the Euphorbia genus. It forms dense clusters of short, columnar stems that are ribbed and covered in small tubercles, each tipped with tiny, spine-like structures. The stems are typically green to blue-green and may develop reddish tones under stress or full sun. In spring to early summer, Euphorbia submammillaris produces small, yellow-green cyathia (Euphorbia’s unique flower structures) near the tops of the stems, adding subtle color and interest. This species thrives in bright light and well-draining soil, with minimal watering required—especially during dormancy. With its sculptural form and drought tolerance, it makes a bold addition to succulent collections, rock gardens, or arid landscapes.
