Epiphyllum pumilum, commonly known as Orchid Cactus, is a beautiful, fast-growing epiphytic cactus native to southern Mexico and Guatemala. Unlike traditional desert cacti, this tropical cactus naturally grows in forest environments and enjoys bright, filtered light, humidity, and more regular moisture. Its long, branching stems begin upright and eventually become gracefully trailing, making it an excellent choice for hanging baskets, containers, or anywhere its cascading growth can be admired. When mature, Epiphyllum pumilum produces stunning, fragrant white flowers that open at night, typically blooming during the summer or early fall. It thrives in bright, indirect or filtered light and should be protected from harsh afternoon sun. Water it more regularly than a typical desert cactus, allowing the growing medium to dry slightly between waterings while ensuring excellent drainage. Epiphyllum pumilum is best suited to USDA Hardiness Zones 10b–11 and should be protected from cold temperatures in cooler climates. It is generally considered pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs.
