Echinocactus grusonii brevispinus, commonly known as the Short Spine Golden Barrel Cactus, is a rare and highly ornamental form of the classic Golden Barrel Cactus. Native to central Mexico, this cultivar is distinguished by its shorter, more compact spines that are golden-yellow and softer in appearance compared to the standard variety. The plant forms a nearly perfect spherical shape that can reach up to 2–3 feet (60–90 cm) in diameter with age, featuring deep vertical ribs lined with neat rows of areoles and spines. Its vibrant green body and golden spines give it a striking contrast that stands out in both landscape and container gardens. Echinocactus grusonii brevispinus prefers full sun, excellent drainage, and infrequent watering, making it an ideal choice for arid and xeric environments. Though slow-growing, it is highly prized by collectors for its symmetry, color, and unique spine variation.
