Disocactus macranthus (often sold under the older nameEpiphyllum macranthum) is a beautiful tropical epiphytic cactus prized for its long, flat, cascading stems and spectacular, large flowers. The flowers are typically bright yellow to golden-yellow and can be especially striking when the plant is mature and flowering. It is an excellent choice for hanging baskets, where its trailing growth can really shine. Unlike desert cacti, it prefers bright, indirect or filtered light, good humidity, and a well-draining but organic-rich growing medium. Allow the soil to dry somewhat between waterings but avoid letting the plant remain completely dry for extended periods during active growth. Disocactus macranthus is generally considered pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs. It is best suited to USDA Hardiness Zones 10b–11 and should be protected from freezing temperatures. With its tropical appearance, cascading habit, and showy golden blooms, this is a wonderful collector's plant for anyone who enjoys unusual cacti and epiphytic plants.
