Aporocactus flagelliformis 'Rat Tail cactus'
Aporocactus flagelliformis, commonly known as the 'Rat Tail cactus', is a popular hanging succulent from the Cactaceae family. Its name is derived from the long, slender stems that resemble a rat's tail. This plant is native to Southwestern Mexico and Central America and typically has bright green, segmented stems covered in small spines, giving it a fuzzy or hairy appearance. While the spines are soft, handling this plant is still recommended with care.
The Rat Tail cactus can reach a length of approximately 2 to 5 feet, depending on its environment. As it grows, it may develop side shoots, resulting in a denser and more abundant appearance. Its stems trail or cascade, making it an ideal option for hanging baskets or as a trailing addition to gardens or indoor areas. The tubular flowers of the Rat Tail cactus come in various shades, including pink, violet-red, or purple. These blooms usually emerge in late spring or early summer and can last for multiple weeks.
