Consolea rubescens, commonly known as the Roadkill Cactus, is a unique, tree-like cactus native to the Caribbean, particularly Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Named for its flattened, paddle-like stems that often grow horizontally and resemble something you'd see lying on the roadside, this cactus can reach up to 20 feet tall in ideal conditions. Its segmented pads are green and fleshy, sometimes tinged with reddish hues, and it produces small, yellowish-pink flowers followed by fleshy, reddish fruit. The Roadkill Cactus thrives in hot, dry environments and is highly tolerant of drought and poor soils, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping or arid landscapes. It prefers full sun and well-draining soil, requiring very little maintenance once established. This distinctive cactus adds architectural interest and Caribbean flair to any dry-climate garden.
