Known as Cleistocactus strausii, the Silver Torch cactus is a stunning addition to any garden. This columnar cactus, with its vibrant red or burgundy tubular flowers and thin cylindrical stems reaching up to 10 feet, is sure to command attention. Its name is derived from the Greek word "kleistos," meaning "closed," as its flowers rarely open. Surprisingly, this low-maintenance plant originating from Bolivia and Argentina is easy to propagate from stem cuttings, making it an ideal choice for both experienced and novice gardeners alike.
During the spring and summer months, the silver torch cactus prefers moderate watering. In order to promote healthy root growth, it is recommended to water the plant deeply. During the dormant winter season, reduce watering and allow the soil to completely dry out. This cactus thrives in direct sunlight and requires 5-6 hours of exposure to bloom.
