Austrocactus patagonicus
Austrocactus patagonicus
Austrocactus patagonicus, also known as Austrocactus bertinii, is a frost hardy plant with a mix of light and dark spines, some of which are hooked. This species, found across a vast distribution area, displays a wide range of forms varying in hooked spine presence, stem size, and flower color. However, due to the continuous variation, it can be challenging to determine the boundary between species. While Austrocactus patagonicus is considered a synonym for Austrocactus bertinii in its broad sense, it has fewer radial spines and pinkish-yellow flowers, distinguishing it from the typical pale rose-violet flowers of Austrocactus patagonicus. The relationship between these two species remains undefined.
While this cactus is not able to withstand severe frost, it can easily be relocated to a sunny window sill or placed under a grow light if there is a chance of freezing temperatures.
