Agave ovatifolia 'Whale's Tongue' is a striking and robust succulent native to the mountainous regions of northeastern Mexico. This cultivar is named for its broad, rounded, upward-curling leaves that resemble the shape of a whale's tongue. The thick, powdery blue-gray leaves form a symmetrical, solitary rosette that can reach up to 4–6 feet wide and 3–4 feet tall. Each leaf is edged with small, evenly spaced teeth and ends in a sharp terminal spine. Agave ovatifolia 'Whale's Tongue' is highly drought-tolerant and thrives in full sun to partial shade, making it ideal for xeriscapes and low-maintenance landscapes. Though it is a monocarpic species—flowering only once before dying—it often takes many years to bloom, producing a tall stalk with clusters of pale green to yellowish flowers. Its bold form, architectural presence, and cold hardiness make it a standout choice for both gardens and containers.
