Zamioculcas zamiifolia, commonly known as the ZZ Plant, is a popular tropical houseplant prized for its glossy, deep green foliage and exceptional tolerance for low-light conditions. Native to eastern Africa, this slow-growing plant features upright stems lined with thick, waxy leaflets that give it a clean, architectural appearance. Its underground rhizomes store water, allowing the plant to withstand periods of drought and making it one of the easiest houseplants to care for. The ZZ Plant is an excellent choice for homes, offices, and other indoor spaces where low maintenance and year-round greenery are desired.

The ZZ Plant grows best in bright, indirect light but adapts well to low-light environments. It prefers a well-draining potting mix and should be watered only after the soil has dried out completely. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems, as excessive moisture can lead to root and rhizome rot. This hardy plant tolerates average indoor humidity and temperatures, requiring little more than occasional dusting of its leaves to keep them looking their best.

The ZZ Plant is not pet friendly. It contains calcium oxalate crystals, which are toxic to cats, dogs, and horses. If chewed or ingested, the plant can cause irritation of the mouth, tongue, and throat, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. It is best kept out of reach of pets and small children.

USDA Hardiness Zones: 10–12. In most regions, the ZZ Plant is grown exclusively as a houseplant and should be protected from temperatures below 45°F (7°C). With its elegant foliage, remarkable durability, and minimal care requirements, it remains one of the most reliable and attractive indoor plants for beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts alike.
