Tylecodon paniculatus 'Butter Bush'

Tylecodon paniculatus 'Butter Bush', commonly known as the Butter Bush, is a captivating and unique succulent that brings both beauty and interest to your garden or indoor collection. This slow-growing plant features thick, smooth, grey-green leaves that are arranged in clusters along its branching stems, creating a bushy, bush-like appearance. In the spring, Butter Bush produces small, tubular white to pale pink flowers, adding a delicate touch of color. Known for its ability to tolerate drought, Tylecodon paniculatus thrives in well-draining soil and prefers bright, indirect sunlight, making it ideal for containers, succulent gardens, or even as a statement piece on a sunny windowsill. This hardy plant is easy to care for, requiring minimal watering once established, and is perfect for succulent lovers of all levels. With its unique shape and low-maintenance care, Butter Bush makes a standout addition to any plant collection.

Tylecodon paniculatus ‘Butter Bush’ is a winter-growing succulent that has a distinctive summer dormancy period, typically beginning in late spring or early summer as temperatures rise. During dormancy, the plant may drop most or all of its leaves and appear bare or inactive—this is completely normal and is part of its natural growth cycle. Watering should be greatly reduced or stopped while the plant is dormant, as its leafless state means it uses very little moisture and excess water can increase the risk of root rot. Growth generally resumes in late summer to fall, when cooler temperatures return, and watering can gradually be increased as new leaves emerge. For the best results, keep the plant in a bright, dry location with excellent drainage during dormancy and avoid watering simply because it has lost its leaves.
