Tradescantia pallida, commonly known as purple heart or purple heart wandering jew, is a herbaceous plant in the Commelinaceae family. Native to northeast Mexico, this tender evergreen perennial is prized for its striking purple foliage and can be grown in zones 7-10 as a perennial or as an annual or houseplant in colder climates. Its lance-shaped, dark purple leaves, which can reach up to 7 inches in length, grow alternately on fleshy stems covered in pale hairs. Though the stems are fragile, this low-growing trailer can spread widely, reaching about a foot in height. In colder areas, it may die back in winter but will regrow from the roots in spring. During the late summer and autumn seasons, and occasionally at other times, the stems of the plant will produce small, pale pink or purple flowers with bright yellow stamens. These blooms are around ½" wide and have three characteristic petals found in this plant genus. With its versatile uses, this plant can serve as a ground cover, hanging basket plant, or trailer in mixed containers, and also makes for a great houseplant. For best results, plant in clusters and expect a relatively fast spread.

Please Note: Plant will ship bare root with little to no dirt, you will receive a plant similar to the one in the photo. Fragile: leaves may curl, fall off, or bruise during shipping. Will recover with proper light, water, and leaf shedding. The juices in the stems can mildly irritate skin, so it's important to keep this plant out of reach of children and animals.
