The smooth, gray-green bark and spreading branches give Pseudobombax ellipticum a distinctive, ornamental appearance even when leafless. Its compound leaves are composed of several glossy, elliptical leaflets that drop during the dry season. In late winter to spring, before the new leaves emerge, the tree bursts into bloom with large, showy flowers featuring long, silky stamens in vivid shades of pink, red, or occasionally white—resembling fireworks or shaving brushes.
