Plectranthus ernstii
Plectranthus ernstii
Plectranthus ernstii is a distinctive, caudiciform perennial native to South Africa, prized for its thickened, woody base and aromatic foliage. The plant develops a swollen, bonsai-like caudex that can reach up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) in diameter, from which emerge branching stems with fleshy, scalloped leaves of a soft gray-green hue. In late summer to autumn, Plectranthus ernstii produces upright spikes of small, tubular lavender to pale purple flowers that attract pollinators and add a delicate contrast to its sturdy form. Adapted to rocky, well-drained habitats, it prefers bright, indirect light and moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Highly valued by collectors, Plectranthus ernstii combines the rugged charm of a succulent with the ornamental appeal of a flowering houseplant, making it a striking feature in containers or bonsai displays.
