Pachypodium lealii var. saundersii, commonly known as the Kudu Lily or Bottle Tree, is a striking, semi-succulent shrub native to southern Africa, particularly found in regions like Namibia and Angola. This variety is known for its swollen, bottle-shaped trunk, which stores water to help the plant survive in arid environments. It features spiny branches and produces large, showy, trumpet-shaped flowers—usually white with a pink to purple flush—that bloom primarily in the warmer months. The glossy, green leaves are typically clustered at the tips of the branches and are deciduous during dry periods. Like other members of the Pachypodium genus, it prefers full sun, excellent drainage, and minimal watering, especially during its dormant phase. Due to its sculptural form and exotic appearance, Pachypodium lealii var. saundersii is popular among collectors of caudiciform and xerophytic plants.
