Fouquieria macdougalii, commonly known as the "Mexican Tree Ocotillo," is a dramatic and striking desert plant native to northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. This deciduous shrub or small tree is known for its long, slender, spiny stems that resemble a collection of tall, leafless branches, often reaching heights of up to 15 feet (4.5 meters). The stems are typically covered in sharp spines, giving the plant a rugged, thorny appearance. In spring, the Mexican Tree Ocotillo bursts into vibrant, tubular red or orange flowers, which bloom along the tips of its branches, attracting pollinators like hummingbirds. The plant is drought-tolerant and thrives in hot, arid conditions, often growing in rocky or sandy soils. During dry periods, the plant may shed its leaves, conserving water, and will sprout new foliage quickly after rainfall. This hardy and eye-catching plant is commonly used in xeriscaping and as an ornamental feature in desert gardens. Can gain and lose its leaves multiple times per year. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soils.
