This succulent is found on rocky slopes in Sonora, Mexico, at elevations of 500 to 2500 feet. Its large, spiky structure consists of long, spiny branches (canes) emerging from a thick trunk. The branches are adorned with small, drought-deciduous green leaves. Vibrant red flower clusters, which bloom primarily in spring but can also appear throughout the year, attract hummingbirds. Can gain and lose its leaves multiple times per year. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soils.
