This succulent is found on rocky slopes in Sonora, Mexico, at elevations of 500 to 2500 feet. Its large, spiky structure consists of long, spiny branches (canes) emerging from a thick trunk. The branches are adorned with small, drought-deciduous green leaves. Vibrant red flower clusters, which bloom primarily in spring but can also appear throughout the year, attract hummingbirds. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soils.
