Ferocactus wislizeni, commonly known as the Arizona barrel cactus or fishhook barrel cactus, is a large, robust cactus species native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It typically grows up to 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide, though older specimens can reach over 6 feet in height. The plant has a stout, cylindrical body with 20 to 28 pronounced ribs lined with heavy, curved spines that resemble fishhooks—giving it its common name. In late summer, Ferocactus wislizeni produces striking yellow to orange flowers at the top of the plant, followed by fleshy, pineapple-shaped fruit. Adapted to arid desert environments, it thrives in full sun and well-drained soils. Known for its resilience and striking appearance, it’s a favorite among desert landscapers and cactus enthusiasts alike.
