The Brachychiton rupestris, also known as the Australian bottle tree or narrow-leaved bottle tree, derives its name from its unique growth pattern and slender leaf blades. This species belongs to the Malvaceae family and is distinguished by its impressive bottle-shaped trunk, which typically takes 5 to 10 years to form. With a thickened caudex at maturity, the Australian bottle tree makes for a striking bonsai. Its narrow, adult leaves and bulbous trunk can reach up to 11 feet in diameter, making it a true standout. In its native habitat, the Australian bottle tree grows to heights between 33 and 82 feet, showcasing its deciduous nature by shedding leaves from September to December. When grown in a pot, this tree reaches a smaller height of around 15 feet.

The Brachychiton rupestris bottle tree produces creamy-yellow flowers with red markings from spring to summer, maintaining a moderate growth rate throughout the year without a distinct dormant season.
