Aloe plicatilis, commonly known as the fan aloe, is a unique and eye-catching succulent native to South Africa. It is characterized by its distinct fan-shaped arrangement of fleshy, gray-green leaves that radiate outward from a central stem, creating a striking appearance. Each leaf is narrow, smooth, and slightly curved, often displaying subtle white markings or striations along the edges. This slow-growing aloe typically reaches about 3 to 6 feet in height and can develop a small tree-like structure with age. Aloe plicatilis thrives in well-draining, sandy soil and requires plenty of sunlight to maintain its compact and symmetrical form. In the spring or summer, it produces tall, branching inflorescences topped with tubular, orange or red flowers that attract birds and pollinators. This plant is both drought-tolerant and frost-sensitive, making it an excellent choice for arid landscapes and container gardening in warm climates.
