Oreocereus celsianus 'Old Man of the Andes Cactus'

Oreocereus celsianus, also known as the Old Man of the Andes cactus, is a distinct species of columnar cactus found in high-altitude regions of the Andes Mountains in South America. Its most notable feature is its long, dense covering of white hairs and orange-yellow spikes, which resemble the beard of an old man. This unique appearance not only adds to its aesthetic appeal, but also serves as protection against heat and frost. When grown in its natural habitat, this cactus can form clumps up to 24 inches wide and reach heights of 10 feet. The ribbed stem, covered in silky white hairs, makes it a challenge to describe its shape accurately. It should not be confused with the Old Man cactus, also known as Cephalocereus senilis, which is found in the Baja California region of Mexico. 

 The Old Man of the Andes cactus boasts diurnal, tubular, or slightly funnel-shaped flowers that emerge from its areoles. These blooms exhibit a stunning array of colors, including shades of pale purplish pink, white, yellow, and dark red during the spring. They feature mauve pink to dark red inner tepals and greenish brown outer tepals, appearing laterally at the top of the plant after several years of growth. This cactus is known for producing clusters of blossoms from a single areole, attracting pollinators like bees and birds and ensuring the survival of this unique species.
