The Chinese Dunce Cap, scientific name Orostachys malacophylla var. iwarenge, has a soft and delicate appearance similar to succulents, yet it is able to thrive outdoors in zones 6 and above throughout the year. Its lavender grey rosettes cluster together and can withstand harsh frosts by dying back and regrowing in the spring. This plant is native to Japan and is recognizable by its tall, conical fall bloom stalks that produce small, yellow to white flowers, growing up to 6.0" in height. Despite its name, it actually originates from dry, mountainous regions in Japan. The Chinese Dunce Cap is a prolific plant, producing many offsets on long stolons, and is suitable for use as a ground cover or spilling out of containers. This variety is monocarpic, meaning that each rosette will only bloom once in its lifetime.
